Teething

Below you will find the results of my having challenged myself for a number of days to write a short story with a beginning and middle and an end inside of 30 minutes. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

She seemed preoccupied with teething. She talked about it all the time. Imaging that her gums were swollen and a pulsating red. Dull coursing pain. The corners of her mouth damp and raw with saliva. She would soak a washcloth in cold water and chew on it until pink suggestions of blood arrived.

She was in her thirties and had been married to Bobby for about a year. They met at a town meeting, discussing the new commemorative park benches. Within 15 minutes, she revealed to him her emerging oral fixation and he talked about he often pretended to be blind.

That weekend, he wrapped bandages around his face and she applied wild red lipstick. They wandered around the mall, she guiding him along by his elbow. That night, she curled up on the couch and tilted her head back. He ran dental floss between her teeth until she bled.

They joined an internet group, officiated by a man who claimed to have only one foot. They had their doubts.
