Don’t Ya Just Know It

Below you will find the results of my having challenged myself for a number of days to write a short story with a beginning and middle and an end inside of 30 minutes. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

…and he stood before his congregation. His robes, once bright purple, had darkened with perspiration. He had trouble breathing. The sweat from his brow blinded him. He spoke softly.

“Ah Ah Ah Ah…”

The men and women shouted back.

Ah! Ah! Ah! Ah!

Their energy seem to fill his chest like cold mountain air.

“Heeeeeyyyyyy-Oh!”

Again, the crowd pushed back.

Heeeeeyyyyyy-Oh!

“Gooba Gooba Gooba Gooba!”

Gooba Gooba Gooba Gooba!

“Ah Ah Ah Ah!”

Ah Ah Ah Ah!

By now, tears rolled down his cheeks. He wept. Openly. His voice struggled to pull itself out of his throat.

“Ah Ah Ah Ah!”

Ah Ah Ah Ah!

“Heeeeeyyyyyy-Oh!”

Heeeeeyyyyyy-Oh!

He collapsed to the floor. The crowd climbed over the pews in a riotous manner.

A boy lifted the robed man’s head off the wooden floor, and slide a makeshift pillow – a folded jacket – underneath.

“That chant?” asked the young man. “Wasn’t that Huey Piano Smith and The Clowns?”

“Yeah,” gasped The Robed Man. “I love those guys.”
