Perfect Skin

Below you will find the results of my having challenged myself for a number of days to write a short story with a beginning and middle and an end inside of 30 minutes. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

When David came to pick me up for the junior prom, Dad answered the door wearing a bolo tie and a linen sports jacket decorated with Keith Haring designs he’d bought in Philadelphia in 1986.

“Hey, David!” my dad exclaimed. “Come on in. I hear you play guitar!” Dad made David and I sit on the couch while he put some Psychedelic Furs on the stereo. He took a bunch of pictures and then, inevitably, pulled out his guitar: an Ovation acoustic with a rounded plastic back.

He ran through the entire first side of R.E.M.’s “Reckoning” and encored with “Love On A Farmboy’s Wages.”

David suggested that it was time to go.

He drove.

My dad wanted to start a band with David. I didn’t tell him that on the ride over, but David was weird for the rest of the night, anyway.
