Chagrin Falls!

Below you will find the results of my having challenged myself for a number of days to write a short story with a beginning and middle and an end inside of 30 minutes. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

Morris had barely fallen asleep when Marsha entered the bedroom. He hadn’t even noticed she’d left.

“There’s a spider in the bathroom,” she said, “and you have to kill it.”

She handed Morris a machete.

She led a confused Morris to the living room, where she pointedly refused to turn on the lights.

“This isn’t the bathroom, Marsha,” he said.

“Yes, it is. Just wave the machete around and perhaps you’ll kill the spider.”

Morris ignored this last suggestion, and simply flipped on the lights.

Standing in front of him, on a large ‘X’ drawn on the shag carpet, was Dave, Martha’s estranged ex-husband, upon whom she had placed an enormous life insurance policy.

“Hey, Dave.”

“Hey, Morris.”

Both of them turned towards Martha.

“I feel like I’m being quietly judged,” she said, after a moment.
