Dress Rehearsal

Below you will find the results of my having challenged myself for a number of days to write a short story with a beginning and middle and an end inside of 30 minutes. Here is what I came up with. I hope you like it.

The thirds graders were, mysteriously, much better actors than the fourth graders, on the whole. Perhaps the fourth graders were already becoming too self-conscious?

Timmy strode across the stage, his chin jutted outward like an arrogant boxer’s. A plastic sword was tucked into his belt.

He stood before Kyle, whose face was covered in black and red zinc face paint. Kyle wore a burlap sack and held a plastic skull under his arm.

“I am Myles Standish,” announced Timmy. His voice resounded through the auditorium. “I am the founder of Plymouth Colony. You must be Squanto The Indian.”

”Ooga Booga Ooga Booga,” yammered Kyle, hopping from one foot to the other.

“The ‘ooga booga’ will get big laughs,” thought Miss Wilburforce, the play’s director.

It didn’t.

  1. Thanks for starting my day with this. If there was ever such a thing as a talking Guy Benoit Calendar ap – well – that would be the only good reason for me to get a smartphone.
